This morning we had plans to go into the coliseum and see all the other pressed ruins surrounding it. Instead we made one wrong turn and ended up walking in huge circles around it (not even spotting it). But this okay since there is so much to see in Rome we still saw a lot of cool things. The first structure we stumbled upon by accident was the P
apal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran . A huge cathedral with the most incredible details on the inside.
It is the oldest and ranks first among the four Papal Basilicas or major basilicas of Rome. The ceilings were covered in gold finishes and extraordinary paintings. One of the most beautiful buildings we have seen yet. After this, we came across the the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin, a more minor basilica. Inside this basilica is where they keep La Boccaccio Della Verita, "the mouth of truth" - an image of a manlike face carved out of marble.
The sculpture is thought to be part of a first-century ancient Roman fountain, or perhaps a manhole cover. We walked for a bit more taking in the view of the many more ancient structures that are dispersed throughout the city. Naturally, we got very hungry after all the walking so we headed to an area that wasn't so touristy for the best food. We enjoyed the most delicious Boucatini pasta and an anchovy pizza. With our bellies full we walked home along the river, gazing at the beauty of the city when it's all lit up at night.
