Day 52 - Roma

We were up very early this morning to catch our 6am train to Rome. Our kind new friend Riccardo drove us to the station and bid us farewell! The train took about 4 hours - we tried to sleep for most of it. We arrived by 10am and headed to our hostel to unload our monstrous bags and take a little break. As soon as we arrived in Rome we noticed the crazy hot weather; almost 40 degrees, and the forecast showed zero signs of any clouds or rain. After we dropped off our bags we walked down the street to grab a bite to eat. Typical Italian lasagna with some fish, potatoes , and fried veggies. We also noticed that Italians serve much larger portions compared to the French. This allowed us to share meals or save half of our own meals for a later time. We were tired and full so we proceeded to take a nice long nap after lunch. If there is one thing we learned while traveling, its that proper rest and lengthy breaks are just as important as in depth sight seeing. Feeling much better after our nap, we headed out. Our first stop was the Santa Maria Maggiore church, which was very big and beautiful. We walked a bit further and eventually spotted the famous colosseum. All the structures in Rome are incredibly ancient and very distinguishable from any other sites we've seen. We finally headed back to the hostel where we had a drink with one of our room mates and exchanged travel stories. Later that night we ventured into a popular local area called San Lorenzo where many students go to hang out on weekends. The night life was very similar to other cities we've been in such as Lisbon and Barcelona. Lots of young people drinking in the squares, surrounded by lively bars and discos where everyone heads afterwards to dance and socialize.
